The KCSE results were released on Monday ,February 28th.One notable aspect is the sharp decline in the performance of Starehe Boys Center this year. The school did not rank among the top ten schools in the country and also did not produce a single student among the top fifty nationally. Hopefully ,the authorities will quickly work on the needed changes in order to bring back the school back to its former illustrious days. The KCSE candidates will access their results by sending their details to 5052 or by visiting the KNEC website. The issue that most often gets ignored is the role of that a good performance in the languages plays. While the advantage of science and math are indeed undeniable, languages and humanities have been relegated to the back burner. In deed, many schools and universities have somehow slashed budgets for languages and humanities. All the government education policies appear to encourage the vision 2030 program of industrialization. Many executives now agree that communication skills contribute greatly to a person’s career success. However, on average, today’s high school and university graduates can hardly communicate in English or Kiswahili.Furthermore, the two languages are compulsory and hence must be passed in order for one to secure a good overall grade. In deed, many at times, an average student may score an A simply because they were good in the languages while an exceptionally bright student gets an A- simply because of scoring a B- in English and Kiswahili.

Humanities have also been ignored although almost all early scientists used it as a benchmark to their great works. Isaac Newton, Copernicus and other European renaissance scientists were great philosophers as well as scientists. By studying the works of Chinua Achebe, Chimmamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ken Saro Wiwa; one’s mind is opened in innumerable ways. For in essence, the purpose of science is to upset whereas the purpose of art is to upset; and therein lies the value of each. Perhaps a thought for Kenyan educationists not to completely abandon the languages and humanities as a former education minister had suggested.<Tags> KCSE 2011 results.
